I have been practicing criminal law for 12 years and have been admitted to practice in Kansas and Oklahoma, and before the United States District Court for the District of Kansas as well as the Western District of Missouri. I established The Law Office of James L. Spies, P.A. after six years as a prosecutor. In that capacity, I gained first-hand experience prosecuting serious violent felonies including murder, rape, and child abuse cases.

In my private criminal law practice, I provide my clients with the wealth of knowledge I gained as a prosecutor to develop the best defense for their cases. As a prosecutor I was an instructor at the National Advocacy Center, teaching courses on trial techniques to other prosecutors.

While there are times when a plea bargain will provide the best result in a case, I am first and foremost a trial lawyer who has litigated more than 50 major jury trials, including federal drug trafficking charges as well as murder, rape, and child abuse cases in state court. I am always willing to listen to a prosecutor's proposal, but will not shy away from trial. All cases are prepared as if we are going to court, even if you ultimately decide to accept a plea bargain.
